DAYTON, Ohio — The Dayton Police Department said a security guard died after an inmate receiving treatment at Miami Valley Hospital shot the guard and then shot himself Wednesday morning.
The Montgomery County Coroner's Office identified the guard as Darrell Holderman, 78, and the inmate as Brian Booth, 30.
According to Dayton police, the inmate was from Montgomery County jail. Dayton police said Booth came to the hospital to receive treatment around 1 a.m. Officials said they believed he became sick overnight and was brought to the hospital to detox.
At 9:45 a.m. the inmate grabbed a security guard's gun, shot the guard and then ran out of the E.R. and shot himself. The guard at the time immediately received treatment at the hospital, and the inmate died from the self-inflicted gunshot wound, officials said.
Officials said the self-inflicted gunshot would was reported to police close to 10 a.m. The hospital gave an "all clear" around 11:20 a.m.
At around 3:15 p.m., officials announced the guard died from his injures.
