COLUMBUS, Ohio — Columbus City Council members plan to hold a vigil for the victims of the Texas elementary school shooting on Thursday, June 2 at Columbus City Hall.

The vigil will start at 7 p.m., and city hall will be illuminated in orange — the color for gun violence awareness. It comes just a day before National Gun Violence Awareness Day, which is June 3.

On Tuesday, an 18-year-old male opened fire inside Robb Elementary School in Uvalde, Texas, killing at least 19 children and two teachers. The investigation is ongoing.

The attack lasted around 40 minutes, officials said.

According to the nonprofit tracking group the Gun Violence Archive, Tuesday’s massacre was the 213th mass shooting in the United States this year. Those shootings — averaging nearly 1.5 a day — have resulted in 242 deaths and 912 injuries.

The Columbus community also held a vigil for the Buffalo grocery store victims over the weekend. A gunman marched into the Tops Friendly Market and fatally shot 10 Black people and injured three others in what authorities said was a racist attack.
