COLUMBUS, Ohio — Ohio State University men’s basketball coach Chris Holtmann announced staff promotions Wednesday, including a new associate head coach with roots deep in the Ohio basketball landscape.

Holtmann prompted Jake Diebler to associate head coach heading into his 14th season in college basketball, the university announced in a press release.

For the last three seasons, Diebler was an assistant coach on Holtmann’s staff and also spent three seasons as the video coordinator at Ohio State from 2014-2016.

“Jake has a very bright future in this profession and I’m excited about his well-earned promotion,” Holtmann said in a press release. “He has done excellent work for us since coming here from Vanderbilt three years ago. He has a strong work ethic, great player relationships, reinforces our culture and he has recruited exceptionally well.”

Diebler expressed his excitement for the opportunity.

“I’m blessed to be able to continue to serve coach Holtmann and the Ohio State basketball program,” said Diebler. “This is a great opportunity for me to continue to learn from and grow alongside one of the very best in college basketball. My family and I love Ohio State, the city of Columbus, and are looking forward to working with this year’s team. Exciting things are ahead for the Buckeyes, and I can’t wait to get started with Team 124 this summer!”

During the 2021-22 season, Diebler stepped into the acting head coach role and helped lead the Buckeyes to a 95-87 victory versus Northwestern on Jan. 9.

Before joining the Ohio State staff, Diebler served as an assistant coach at Vanderbilt.

Diebler played his collegiate career at Valparaiso from 2005 to 2009. He then served as a student assistant and director of operations at Valpo, as well as two years as an assistant.

He played his high school career at Fostoria High School and then Upper Sandusky High School, where during his senior season led the Rams to an undefeated record in the 2004-05 season and the 2005 Division II state championship. Diebler also was the 2005 D-II Player of the Year.

He holds the OHSAA state records for assists in a season (294), assists in a career (835) and most steals in a career (578).

His younger brother, Jon, played for the Buckeyes from 2007-2011, and recently was named to Thad Matta's staff at Butler.
