Dwayne Haskins, Pittsburgh Steelers quarterback and former Ohio State standout, died after being hit by a car Saturday morning.

ESPN first reported the news, saying Haskins was hit by a car in south Florida while training with other Steelers quarterbacks, wide receivers and running backs for offseason workouts. 

During his time at Ohio State, Haskins, 24, set Big Ten records and in 2018, he finished third in voting for the Heisman Trophy. 

The Washington Commanders chose Haskins with the 15th overall pick in 2019, but was eventually released in 2020. The Steelers then picked him up in 2021. 

Steelers Head Coach Mike Tomlin wrote in a statement on Twitter he is "devastated and at a loss for words."

"To say we are heartbroken is an understatement," wrote Washington Commanders co-owners Dan and Tanya Snyder over Twitter. 

The New Jersey native made a lasting impact at Ohio State when he helped the team to the Rose Bowl in 2018. Haskins also helped the Buckeyes beat Michigan in Ann Arbor in 2017 when J.T. Barrett got injured during the middle of the game. 

The Ohio State Department of Athletics also sent out a statement in wake of Haskins death.

"The Ohio State Department of Athletics is terribly saddened to learn of the death of Dwayne Haskins Saturday morning. We are thinking of the entire Haskins family during this most difficult time. Our prayers are with the family, and with his current and former teammates, coaches, friends and relatives," officials wrote.
