The Justice Center Executive Steering Committee will consider a site at its meeting Tuesday that could be used as the county’s new jail. The site is 2700 Transport Road in Cleveland.
The committee will meet in executive session Tuesday to discuss purchasing the site. When the group returns from executive session, the committee will entertain public comment before taking a vote.
If approved, Cuyahoga County Council will need to sign off on the new location.
In September 2021, County Executive Armond Budish said a new corrections center could cost $550 million. Budish proposed extending a .25% sales tax beyond 2027 to finance the jail.
The county approved the .25% increase to the county’s sales tax in 2007 with the intention to finance a new convention center. The tax adds $2.50 for every $1,000 in taxable goods.
Budish said extending the sales tax past 2027 would not constitute a “tax increase” and likened the extension of the tax to a renewal.
According to the state of Ohio, Cuyahoga County has the highest sales tax rate in the state at 8%.
County officials said a new corrections center would house up to 1,900 inmates.
