CINCINNATI — Travis Steele, Xavier’s men’s basketball coach the last four seasons, has mutually parted ways with the university after a 70-50 tenure.

Steele’s Musketeers failed to qualify for the NCAA Tournament in all four seasons he was at Xavier. Xavier qualified for this year’s NIT. The Musketeers defeated Cleveland State on Tuesday in his last game as coach.

Jonas Hayes will serve as the team’s interim coach for Xavier’s next contest against either Iona or Florida in the second round of the tournament.

"I want to thank Travis and his staff for their tireless efforts on behalf of the Xavier Basketball program," said XU athletic director Greg Christopher. "Travis led the team with the utmost character and in a first-class manner. He navigated us through a difficult time with COVID and always focused on what was best for our student-athletes.

“I have tremendous respect for Travis, and he's been a part of Xavier Basketball for more than a decade, playing an important role in some of the program's greatest accomplishments. We collectively appreciate all that Travis has given to Xavier and wish him the best moving forward.”
