COLUMBUS, Ohio — Starting Friday, Ohio State University is using a new tool to report and alert the community about off-campus crime.

The Community Crime Map has a radius of one mile and will track crimes like aggravated assault, residential burglary and robbery that's reported within a 30-day time frame. It also includes statistics from the Columbus Division of Police.

The community can sign up for alerts, as well as access the following features:

  • Turn on additional crime categories
  • Access months or years of data
  • See heat maps and trends, including time of day
  • Sign up for crime alerts (daily, weekly or monthly)
  • Enter your own, personal home address to set up tailored alerts

“Your safety is our top priority. We will continue to engage with students, faculty and staff to enhance the university’s safety resources, including the ways in which we share information with our Buckeye community,” wrote Ohio State Director of Public Safety Monica Moll in a campus-wide message Thursday.

This new crime map tool replaces the Neighborhood Safety Notice emails, launched by CPD and the university in 2016. The university will still issue Buckeye Alerts and Public Safety Notices alongside the Community Crime Map alerts under Ohio law.
