COLUMBUS, Ohio — The Columbus Police Department confirmed Friday evening that officers shot a man after responding to calls of an active shooter on Interstate 71 near Polaris Town Center.

The shooting forced Interstate 71 to close for much of the day Friday. The interstate reopened during rush hour, the Ohio Department of Transportation reported.

Columbus Police said that a 2014 gray Ford Fusion went off the left side of the roadway and struck a cable barrier. Police said someone in the vehicle fired a gun at cars traveling on Interstate 71 northbound.

Officers from Columbus Police and the Ohio State Highway Patrol arrived as the suspect continued to fire his weapon, police said. Columbus Police said officers opened fire on the suspect, who was struck. The suspect was then taken into custody and transported to Grant Medical Center for non-life-threatening injuries, police said.

Columbus Police said a second person in vehicle was also taken into custody during the incident.

There's been no other reports of injuries from drivers who passed by when the suspect was firing his weapon.

The suspect hasn't been identified. The Ohio Bureau of Criminal Investigation is involved and reviewing body camera footage from the incident, according to authorities.
