CLEVELAND — It's a cause for celebration. Cleveland-based Pierre's ice cream released a new flavor for it's 90th birthday: Cupcake.

"Cupcake is dressed for any party," the company wrote in a statement Tuesday. "It’s creamy, indulgent recipe features Cake Batter Ice Cream swirled with blue frosting and candy confetti flakes. It is on shelf now at stores and is packaged in Pierre’s familiar red, 1.5-quart ice cream containers."

Pierre's opened its doors in 1932 on East 82nd St. and Euclid Ave in Cleveland. Named after Alexander “Pierre” Basset, the company outgrew its first location and then moved in 1995, one mile west to its current distribution center and headquarters.

But the company didn't stop growing from there.

In 2011, the company opened a 5,000-square-foot ice cream factory containing upgraded technology with a focus on food safety and efficiency.

The first product Pierre's produced was a pint of ice cream that came in French Vanilla, Swiss Chocolate and Strawberry.
