CLEVELAND — Funeral arrangements have been set for an off-duty Cleveland police officer who was shot and killed in a carjacking on New Year's Eve.
Shane Bartek, 25, was killed after he was shot twice during a robbery of his vehicle on Dec. 31 in the parking lot of an apartment building on Cleveland’s west side, Cleveland police officials said in a press release.
Bartek was pronounced dead on arrival at Fairview Hospital, officials said.
Bartek's family will greet mourners from 4 - 8 p.m. on Monday, Jan. 10 at Grace Church, 7393 Pearl Road in Middleburg Heights, Ohio, according to Tomon and Sons Funeral Homes. Funeral services for Bartek will take place at 10 a.m. on Tuesday, Jan. 11 at Grace Church.
Bartek was hired by the Cleveland Division of Police in August of 2019. He was assigned to the Fifth District on the city’s northeast side.
Tamara McLoyd, 18, has been charged with aggravated murder in the slaying of Bartek. Her bond was set at $5 million on Monday.
McLoyd is also facing an unrelated felony charge for aggravated robbery. The bond for that charge was set at $125,000. A preliminary hearing has been scheduled for Jan. 11.
A 25-year-old man who was driving Bartek’s car after a high-speed chase was also arrested in connection to the case. He has been charged with receiving stolen property and fleeing and eluding.
The killing remains under investigation, authorities said.
The city of Cleveland announced on Twitter that officials lowered flags to half-staff in honor of Bartek on Tuesday.
“Today, we lower the flag at half mast to honor the life and service of Officer Shane Bartek. Please pray for his family and the Cleveland Division of police as we mourn this senseless loss,” Cleveland Mayor Justin M. Bibb said on Twitter.
Family members for Bartek said in his obituary he will be missed.
