CLEVELAND — Past the halfway point of the NFL season, nagging injuries become the norm as the physicality of the game takes its toll.

What You Need To Know

  • Baker Mayfield left Sunday’s game with a knee injury

  • There was no structural damage to Mayfield’s knee, both Mayfield and coach Kevin Stefanski confirmed

  • Mayfield is also still recovering from an injured non-throwing shoulder

  • Sunday’s loss to the Patriots dropped the Browns to 5-5 for the season

For Browns quarterback Baker Mayfield, the 2021 season has been no exception. Mayfield left Sunday’s game with a knee injury. He said that there was no structural damage to the knee on Sunday, which coach Kevin Stefanski confirmed on Monday.

Mayfield said that he took an awkward hit that caused the knee injury.

The injury is that latest blow to Mayfield, who has struggled to recapture a solid 2020 season that resulted in the Browns winning a playoff game. Mayfield has also encountered a shoulder injury on his non-throwing side, and has worn a sling at times this season.

“He’s fighting through it,” Stefanski said.

As for when it might be time to let Mayfield heal?

“We’ll always make smart decisions with the medical staff, with the player, but he’s fighting through it,” Stefanski said.

Mayfield said Sunday he is “pretty beat up right now." He said he has to find a way to get healthy.

Mayfield missed Week 7 due to the should injury. It was the first time since 2018 Mayfield was out with an injury.

In 21 passing attempts against New England, Mayfield completed 11 passes for 73 yards. A week prior against Cincinnati with the same number of attempts, Mayfield completed 14 passes for 73 yards.

With a bothersome knee, Mayfield left the game Sunday for Case Keenum.
