CLEVELAND — Mondays can be hard, but for Cleveland resident Kevin Jones, they get a little easier once he’s outside riding his bike.

What You Need To Know

  • The nonprofit Slow Roll Cleveland started in 2013

  • Hundreds of people meet at a new spot each Monday to bike 10 miles at a leisurely pace

  • The purpose is to build camaraderie and to help cyclists be more visible and respected on the road

  • The group rides from April to November

“I get out here and it's just like a load lifted,” said Jones. "I don't think about work. I don't think about anything else going on in the world. It’s just me and my bike."

He enjoys it so much, he became the president of the nonprofit Slow Roll Cleveland. Slow Roll started in Detroit and Cleveland was the second city to hop on board in 2013. Since then, more than a dozen cities around the world including Chicago, Berlin, Minneapolis and Buffalo have joined the movement.

“We come out to de-stress, decompress (and) to just have a good time with our neighbors here in the city,” said Jones.

Every Monday, hundreds of people meet at a new spot to bike 10 miles.

“Today, our ride is going from Toby's Plaza at University Circle,” said Jones. "And we'll be riding around the Glenville neighborhood and University Circle neighborhood.”

Their slogan is “Happy Monday!” and they yell it at cars and people as they ride through town.

“Our slogan is happy Monday, because I mean, we're happy on Monday,” said Jones. “And if you look at the faces, I mean, I don't see anybody with a scowl.”

People come from all over northeast Ohio. Jones said one of the goals of Slow Roll Cleveland is to unify the city through bicycles, but another goal is to help make cyclists more visible and respected on the road.

“One of the purposes of the ride would be to promote safe riding on the city streets of Cleveland,” said Jones. “You see, a lot of people ride independently. And I do it — lots of people do it. But when we ride in a group, it really, really brings out awareness that cyclists are on the road. And that the road is ... it belongs to bicycles as well.”

Mike Majer has been riding with Slow Roll for five years. He said the rides take him back to when he was a kid and rode bikes through town with his family.

“It's just a very welcoming group. People that just want to just want to enjoy a beautiful evening and be a kid again,” said Majer. “I was 13 when my dad died, and these rides take me back to riding with my dad.”

He said not many people look forward to Mondays, but everyone who rides with Slow Roll Cleveland does.

“There's no better way to start a week, to spend a Monday evening than Slow Roll Cleveland,” said Majer. “It's amazing.”

“When we ride these bikes, we feel great. We feel free. We feel like we belong, and we want to share that feeling with others,” said Jones. “We love Mondays. We look forward to Slow Roll.”
