COLUMBUS, Ohio — The Ohio State Buckeyes are back in the win column, beating Tulsa 41-20.

Head coach Ryan Day and the players shared their thoughts on the win and what the team has to improve upon to continue being successful.

​​​Day said he was relieved after the win, but said changes are needed on both sides of the ball to have a successful season.

The 41-20 win was much closer for the majority of the game. But a pick-6 by Cam Martinez in the final minutes of the game helped seal the deal.

Buckeye quarterback C.J. Stroud threw for 185 yards, but also lost one fumble and threw an interception.

Day said he’s confident in his freshman quarterback and Stroud said every game is a lesson.

“Every game is a learning aspect," Stroud said. "I’m only 19 and a redshirt freshman. It’s no excuse but I still have a lot of football to learn.”

Day alluded to changes on the defensive side of the ball.

With defensive coordinator Kerry Coombs up in the press box and secondary coach Matt Barnes on the sideline calling the plays, Day said he was happy with how things looked but would still like to see more progress.

“It was great to see the defense come up with a big sack, Cam to get the interception at the end of the game," Day said. "I thought they battled throughout the game but there’s still a lot of things to work on both sides of the ball.”

And an Archie Griffin record was broken. TreVeyon Henderson set a new freshman single-game rushing record with 277 yards.

“I wasn’t expecting something like this," Henderson said. "Like I told you all before the season, I had a lot of big goals for myself and I reached one of my goals today but I got plenty more so I got to keep working.”

The Buckeyes have another home game next Saturday, hosting Akron in the first home night game of the season.
