SANDUSKY, Ohio — Following the lead of its companion park Kings Island, Cedar Point announced this week plans to go cashless starting in 2022.

What You Need To Know

  • Cedar Point joins Kings Island and other attractions by eliminating cash transactions

  • Cedar Point will have cash-to-card kiosks throughout the park

  • Venues converting to cashless transactions is part of a national trend spurred by the COVID-19 pandemic

  • Officials say cashless transactions reduce labor costs

Although transactions will be cashless at the amusement park, Cedar Point will give visitors the ability to convert their cash into a card at kiosks.

“There are plenty of benefits, both for guests and our parks. Cashless transactions are faster, safer and more secure. Guests can spend less time in the check-out waiting on change and more time hitting up their favorite rides or other attractions,” said Gary Rhodes, a spokesperson for Cedar Point’s parent company Cedar Fair.

Rhodes added that other benefits include no longer needing to pay for armored vehicles to transport cash and reduced labor in accounting for cash transactions.

In July, Kings Island announced it was going cashless, but that five cash-to-card kiosks would be located throughout the park. Kings Island still accepts credit cards, debit cards, Google Pay and Apple Pay.

“Overall, our park guests have responded very favorably to going cashless. It’s been pretty much a non-event for most,” Rhodes said.

The amusement parks are part of a national trend moving away from cash transactions. A number of stadiums and arenas throughout Ohio have previously announced a transition to becoming cashless venues.

While the COVID-19 pandemic was the impetus for such decisions, many venues intend not to return to cash transactions when the pandemic ends.
