SUMMIT COUNTY, Ohio — The Summit County Probate Court and Summit Metro Parks are offering couples planning weddings or renewing vows a unique alternative to a traditional ceremony.

  • Couples can invite up to 10 guests to the ceremony and photographs are encouraged

  • The ceremony will take place in a shaded area with beautiful views or in the park lodge if it rains

  • Summit County Common Pleas Judge Alison Breaux will officiate on behalf of Probate Court

The third annual “Promises in the Park: An Outdoor Wedding Event,” is a free, outdoor, group ceremony set for 12:30 p.m. on Friday, Sept. 3 at Goodyear Heights Metro Park. The park is located at 2077 Newton St. in Ellet.

Couples can register online to reserve a spot. Couples can invite up to 10 guests to the ceremony and photographs are encouraged.

“We hope this event continues to serve as a symbol of hope and happiness in an otherwise challenging time,” said Summit Metro Parks Executive Director Lisa King in a release.

The day of the event, couples should arrive between noon and 12:15 to sign-in. Summit County Common Pleas Judge Alison Breaux will officiate on behalf of Probate Court. Cupcakes and music will be provided for the ceremony.

Weather permitting, the ceremony will take place in a shaded area of the park with beautiful views, organizers said. If it rains, the ceremony will move indoors to the park lodge, and follow COVID-19 safety guidelines.

Summit Metro Parks will give each couple a sapling tree to plant at home in honor of their vows.

Couples must receive a marriage license from Summit County Probate Court before the ceremony.

The Summit County Courthouse is open 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday through Friday at 209 S. High St. in downtown Akron. Couples must be at the courthouse no later than 3:45 p.m. to process an application and receive a marriage license. Visit the Probate Court website to learn more about the process.
