AKRON, Ohio – The city will change-up the 2021 State of the City address this year, with Mayor Dan Horrigan delivering an evening speech from Lock 3 Park.

The address traditionally has been held during an indoor luncheon.

Hosted by the Akron Roundtable, the event is set for Monday, Aug. 9, at 200 King James Way (South Main Street) in downtown Akron.

Doors open at 5:15 p.m. with this year’s address at 6 p.m., followed by live music, which concludes at 7:30, the city said.

The event is sold out but will be livestreamed on the mayor’s Facebook page and posted to the city’s social media channels.

During the address, Horrigan, who is serving his second term as mayor, will talk about the city’s economic challenges and outline goals, the city said.

The mayor is expected to detail the distribution of $153 million the city was granted through the American Rescue Plan, which includes youth and community violence prevention, recreation and public space improvements and housing initiatives, the city said.

Horrigan is also expected to talk about economic justice, racial equity and ways the city is addressing disparities of opportunity post-COVID.

For the fifth year, proceeds from the event will benefit the Russell M. Pry Memorial Scholarship at the University of Akron School of Law in honor of the late Summit County Executive Russ Pry.
