COLUMBUS, Ohio — The Columbus Crew will host the Campeones Cup 2021 in September, the first international match scheduled to be played at the new stadium

The Campeones Cup is the annual match between the reigning MLS and Liga MX champions. The Crew will take on Cruz Azul of Mexico at Lower.com Field — the two most decorated teams in their respective leagues.

Over last two Campeones Cup games, MLS won one year and Liga MX won another year. The Toronto FC was defeated by Tigres UABL in 2018, and Atlanta United beat Club América in 2019. The 2020 game was canceled due to the pandemic.

"Campeones Cup, together with Leagues Cup, are part of a larger partnership between the two most important soccer leagues in North America, MLS and LIGA MX, as launched in 2018," Major League Soccer wrote in a press release Monday. "The partnership is rooted not only in the on-field rivalry, designed to strengthen the sport in the region, but by a true spirit of collaboration off it, with a focus on sharing best practices and on being a force for positive change in the local communities of both leagues."

The reward? Global bragging rights.

Cruz Azul recently won its ninth title in the history of the Liga BBVA MX after winning the Campeón de Campeones Sunday night. The Columbus Crew is the reigning MLS club champion.

The game is slated for Sept. 29 at 8 p.m. Ticket information will be released soon.
