COLUMBUS, Ohio — Former Columbus Division of Police Officer Adam Coy faced a new charge of reckless homicide Friday following the December 2020 death of Andre Hill, court records show.
What You Need To Know
- Former Columbus Division of Police Officer Adam Coy faces a new charge of reckless homicide
- Coy originally was charged with murder, assault and two counts of dereliction of duty
- Coy fatally shot Andre Hill, a 47-year-old Black man from Columbus
The reckless homicide count has been added to the four criminal charges pressed against Coy in February. Coy was charged with murder, assault and two counts of dereliction of duty.
To be found guilty of murder, jurors would have to find that Coy “purposely” caused Hill’s death. To be found guilty of reckless homicide would mean that Coy recklessly caused Hill’s death.
Coy was fired days after fatally shooting Hill, who was unarmed at the time and holding a cellphone in his hand the moment he was shot. Hill was not a suspect in any crime.
Ohio Attorney General Dave Yost handled the preliminary investigation, which led to the original criminal charges.
"I believe the evidence in this case supports the indictment and my office will vigorously prosecute this case," Yost said in February.
Coy claimed that he thought Hill was carrying a gun when he shot the 47-year-old Black man from Columbus.
