CINCINNATI — One local couple made a toast to their lives and marriage together. But instead of two glasses of champagne, they said, “cheers” with two doses of the COVID-19 vaccination.

Noel “Gene” Record, 93, and Virginia Record, 91, pulled up to the drive-thru vaccination site at UC Health’s Gardner Neuroscience Institute building at its Clifton campus, ready to get their shot to the arm.
It was a special day for them, albeit unique.
Celebrating 73 years of marriage, Gene and Virginia could think of wedding anniversaries that were a little more fun, but this one will definitely be just as memorable.
In January, the Northern Kentucky couple became the first to receive COVID-19 vaccinations at UC Health in Ohio’s Phase 1B — which opened the immunization to those 80 years old and older. They returned a few weeks later for their second dose of the vaccination.
For Gene, it was important for them to get the vaccination, as it is one step closer to “normal,” he said.
“I’m a square dance caller, and we have not been able to get together since March. We’re looking forward to people getting vaccinated and getting back to normal, where we can once again square dance and have fun again,” he said.
UC Health is among the more than 750 locations in Ohio providing COVID-19 vaccinations, and has administered first doses to more than 4,700 to those in the community who are 80 years old and older since Jan. 19, when Phase 1B vaccinations began.
“UC Health is proud to do our part to help bring our community out of this pandemic,” said Dr. Dustin Calhoun, associate professor in the Department of Emergency Medicine at the UC College of Medicine and medical director of emergency management for UC Health. “We encourage all who are eligible under Phase 1B to make an appointment to get vaccinated.”
Beginning Feb. 8, the next round of vaccinations for those 65 years old and older began.
And as part of Ohio’s Phase 1A, UC Health has provided vaccinations to more than 7,900 healthcare workers since December.
According to UC Health, you do not need to be a patient through their medical center, but an appointment is required for a vaccination. Appointments may be scheduled through My UC Health (MyChart) or by calling 513-584-DOSE.
