OHIO — The Ohio Department of Health (ODH) recorded 766 new COVID-19 cases among K-12 students and 515 for staff in the last week.
That's up 25% from last week, Oct. 12 through Oct. 18, with a total of 613 student cases and 407 for staff. Since early September, the state has documented a total of 3,146 cases in students and 1,912 cases in staff.
The school cases, which are updated every Thursday, include all public, charter and private schools in the state.
Nearly all cities across the state saw increases.
The Cincinnati area saw the biggest jumps in the state — Cincinnati Public Schools had 37 cases total, and Oak Hills Local documented 21 cases.
In Northeast Ohio, the most notable were Nordonia Hills with eight cases total, Aurora with five cases, Hudson with five cases and Stow-Monroe Falls with five cases.
The Dayton area also saw some sharp upticks, including Northmonth with 11 cases, Xenia with 10 and Tipp City with six cases.
In Central Ohio, three schools had the highest: Dublin City with 19 cases, New Albany Plain Local with 17 cases, and Olentangy with 19 cases.
The numbers come as Ohio shattered it's daily record for COVID-19 cases with 3,590. October alone has been the worst month for Ohio during the pandemic, with more than 42,000 Ohioans getting infected, surpassing the previous high in July of just above 40,000 people.
The number of patients hospitalized with COVID-19 also reached a new high Thursday: 1,536 COVID-19 patients are in hospitals, 416 are in ICU beds, and 226 are on ventilators.
The U.S. also broke a record for daily COVID-19 cases Thursday with 88,521 new cases. The nation is nearing the grim milestone of 9 million cases total.
