COLUMBUS, Ohio —- Isiah Brown, better known by his stage name “Zay Finale,” is an independent artist, Columbus resident and organizer of "Prayer 4 Peace."

He says Thursday night's event is an opportunity to bring the community together to find a sense of peace, and at the same time honor the memory of murder victim and Minneapolis resident George Floyd.

What You Need To Know

  • After a week of unrest in Columbus, community members are turning to solidarity to fight social injustice

  • Organizers of Thursday evening’s “Prayer 4 Peace” hope the event will calm tensions and at the same time, keep the momentum going toward change

  • Four former Minneapolis officers have all been charged in the death of George Floyd

“This is an outcry for the nation, actually. We want to set a good precedent for everyone who feels like they don't have a voice and we want to show them that you actually do have a voice and prayer is a powerful thing," Brown said.

The Prayer 4 Peace candlelight vigil is scheduled to begin at 7 p.m. on Hamilton Ave in Columbus' Mount Vernon community, and will feature local pastors, community leaders, and music.

Co-organizer Alexia Winfield says the goal is to gather ideas from the community on how to tackle social injustice.

“We're you know, filling in the entertainment piece of it to kind of uplift our spirits, but we're also being focused about how can we gather solutions and strategies. So, we're going to issue a public hotline,” said organizer Alexia Winfield.

And Winfield believes progress has been made over the last week with regard to race relations, but she knows it continues to be a long road to equality and justice.

“We are finally getting this message across and its penetrating globally and that's something to celebrate, but we're not done yet, right, we have so much work to do,” said Winfield.

For Brown, he has drawn inspiration from this turning point in history, and believes music and community can help people heal.

“We need to use everything that we feel right now and put it into the music. If there is any city that can lead the way in understanding how to handle the tensions, the tensions that are going on in America right now, it's Columbus Ohio. I feel like there are more people who are willing to be lights and vessels in order to find a way to get past the violence that's happening in our communities,” said Brown.
