PARMA, Ohio — A Cleveland-area church is proving just how strong their community is despite social distancing.

The surprise car parade was put on by St. Mary's in Parma, as they welcomed home a man from fighting cancer.

David Micka was diagnosed with AML — an aggressive form of leukemia — in November.

It's been a long five months, but now he is in remission and says he was overwhelmed by the love shown from his church community.

"I was blushing for hours, I was red face, the tears were hidden very good by the camera operator, so that was well worth it," Micka says.

He says the pastor lured him outside with Slim Jims and that's when Micka heard the horns and saw more than a dozen cars lining the street.

They drove by, showing off their welcome home signs and threw gifts on his lawn — including toilet paper.

Since his diagnosis, his church family has sent him tons of home-cooked food, cards, emails, and Facebook messages, showing that at a time when we are asked to stay apart, people have found a way to remain close.
