HAMILTON, Ohio — In Naomi Short, you can see the strength that this eight-year-old didn’t even know she had — until the day she lost it.
- The Hamilton 8-year-old was diagnosed with brain cancer in September
- Four brain surgeries, radiation, and chemo to come, doctors still gave her just a 30 percent chance of surviving
- She and her family say they’re not giving up the fight
“My hands got all shaky like this and I couldn’t do anything,” said Naomi.
It all happened after months of bad headaches.
And all of a sudden, “I just collapsed in class, just collapsed and I couldn’t even walk up the stairs,” Naomi said.
She was rushed to the hospital and was given a deadly diagnosis.
“I was really surprised and sad because I didn’t want to go through all of this,” said Naomi.
She had a large tumor in her head — brain cancer.
“It was a very shocking moment to say the least…worst moment of my life, honestly,” said Melissa Short, Naomi’s mother.
Her parents had to act fast before it got worse.
“As a mom it’s just like, did I do something wrong while I was pregnant with her, did this go wrong or that go wrong?” said Short.
“As a dad, I was supposed to be the one to protect her from being hurt, and I didn’t, I couldn’t,” said Gary Short, Naomi’s father.
The cancer was spreading, so they opted for surgery to remove the tumors.
In a matter of one month, Naomi would have to get four of them — four different brain surgeries.
“Sometimes I have the moments where I feel like I just wanna cry like I just feel sad,” said Naomi.
She’s currently getting radiation treatments, and will soon go through chemo.
But even after all that, her parents were told she’d have a 30 percent chance to survive.
“Scary, but we have to keep our faith in God that those numbers don’t mean anything,” said Melissa Short.
It’s the reason they’re doing daddy fashion shows, mommy tea parties and making music.
“It’s hard having cancer, but everyone’s helping me,” said Naomi.
And making memories to stay strong, when you’re an eight-year-old fighting cancer.
“I’m gonna kick cancer’s butt,” said Naomi.
