Today is World Autism Awareness Day.

It is a day that highlights the challenges people with autism and those living with autism face on a daily basis.

  • According to the CDC, approximately 1 in 59 children is diagnosed with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) in the U.S.
  • While autism can be diagnosed as early as 18 months, the average age of diagnosis is 4 years old
  • Autism Speaks and the Ad council are partnering on a campaign to educate parents and stress the need for early detection, intervention, understanding and acceptance

And, Autism Speaks, in partnership with the Ad Council, is encouraging parents to learn the signs of autism.

Unfortunately, low income, minority children are often diagnosed much later than others, who are typically diagnosed by the age of 4.

Seeking help early can make a lifetime of difference.

The goal of the campaign is to educate parents and caregivers about the early signs of autism and break down barriers that delay diagnosis and intervention.

AutismSpeaks.org provides resources for families in both English and Spanish languages, including signs of autism, an autism screening tool, and finding local service providers and supports for before, during and after an autism diagnosis.

In an effort to promote more inclusivity and as part of World Autism Month, Autism Speaks is also inviting friends and neighbors around the world to take the pledge to “Light It Up Blue.”

Taking the pledge demonstrates a commitment toward an increased understanding and acceptance of people with autism.
