In a post-State of the Union interview with Spectrum News 1, Congresswoman Marcy Kaptur (OH-09) shared her thoughts on the address, the border security debate, issues important to her district, and her new subcommittee chairwomanship. (You can watch the full interview in the video above)
Kaptur said that the president struck a positive chord on infrastructure, but disagreed with his statement that drug prices are going down.
She also expressed disappointment that in his speech, the president failed to mention Russia, which she believes is a direct threat to America and its allies. Kaptur said she was also surprised the president did not talk about Ukraine and the Nord Stream 2 Pipeline.
Speaking about trade, Kaptur said she is hopeful there will be a good proposal on NAFTA, but she believes that, under Trump’s leadership, the trade deficit has been rising.
Regarding the border wall, Kaptur said the president has led Americans to believe it is a workable solution -- while she thinks it is not. She said it is necessary for Trump to collaborate with experts and have a system that will work effectively for the American people.
Asked about the issues that are impacting her constituents most right now, Kaptur listed health care, pensions and Social Security financing.
In the new Congress, Kaptur was elected the first-ever woman to chair the House Appropriations Subcommittee on Energy and Water Development. She said she hopes to set a standard of excellence leading the committee.
And as the longest-serving woman in the history of the House of Representatives, Kaptur said it was extraordinary to see the number of women who now serve in Congress.
