Rep. Joyce Beatty (D-OH) sat down with Spectrum News 1 prior to Tuesday's State of the Union Address. (Watch the full interview in the video above)
The congresswoman, who represents Ohio's 3rd Congressional District, touched on a number of topics, including: the State of the Union, the border security debate, President Trump's rhetoric, and the state of diversity and inclusion on Capitol Hill.
Beatty said she was hoping to hear words from President Trump that would be civil and presidential. She said, in her opinion, a smart president would unite the country, while a divisive president would continue to do things like tweet controversial opinions or statements, as Trump often does.
Ahead of the president's address, Beatty said she believed there was less than a 50/50 chance Trump would change.
On border security, Beatty said she thinks both sides are making headway and praised Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi for being smart and strategic.
Beatty also said she's excited to be named chair of the Financial Services Diversity and Inclusion Subcommittee. She said this new role will allow her to continue working on the things she has been talking about, such as how to financially meet the needs of middle-class, at-risk and hardworking families.
