Congressman Steve Chabot (R-01) spoke with Spectrum News 1 right after President Trump's State of the Union Address on Tuesday. (You can watch the full interview in the video above)

Chabot said he thought the speech was very uplifting and he hopes people on both sides were listening. He said he was particularly struck by the president’s words that those in Congress should look at what’s in the best interest of the country, rather than what’s best for their political party.

Chabot said Trump talked about two issues that are specific to his district in Ohio—infrastructure and the overall economy. As the lead Republican on the House Small Business Committee, Chabot said the president’s policies have done wonders for the Cincinnati area, where many small businesses exist.

Chabot said he does not think there will be another government shutdown over border security, but he said he does stand with the president on the need to have secure borders. Chabot said he believes a wall is an important part of border protection, and said that in areas where there is a wall, crime has decreased.

Asked what he thinks of Trump's mixed messaging -- calling for unity in scripted speeches but then tweeting often divisive statements -- Chabot said he sees the president's tweets as a way to reach millions of people directly without interference, but he admitted they could be a distraction. He said he would sometimes say things differently, but that the president’s speech was a “home run.”
