OHIO — The Ohio Department of Transportation confirmed that 50 snow plows have been struck this winter.

More than 1,000 plows were out Thursday working to clear the roads of snow as wintry weather moved across the state.

Before the first snow in November, ODOT launched a "Give Us Room to Work" safety campaign, focused on ensuring drivers were using caution sharing the roads with ODOT crews.

Last season, the total number of plows struck was just 22.

ODOT said 11 of the most recent collisions were over this past holiday weekend where a plow was rear-ended.

So far this winter, ODOT said it has used more than 700,000 tons of salt and 14 million gallons of de-icer. ODOT crews have driven more than 8 million miles and logged more than 874,000 hours. For perspective, the moon is only 238,900 miles away.
