When you’re braving the snow-covered roads this season, keep your eyes peeled for the plows that make the streets drivable to begin with.
According to ODOT Press Secretary Matt Bruning, a total of 17 snow plows have been hit this winter season so far. Twenty-two plows were hit across the entire last season.
Bruning said none of the drivers whose plows were hit suffered life-threatening injuries.
“Many times, the damage to our vehicles is minimal, but the plow has to be taken out of service while a crash report is completed and then taken back to the garage for inspection,” he said via email.
If the crash results in a flat tire, it takes longer for the vehicle to return to service, he said.
According to ODOT's data, so far this winter (as of Jan. 6) they've logged 336,139 hours; driven 3,191,296 miles; used 253,664 tons of salt and 5,641,493 gallons of de-icer.
