OHIO — Ohio has a lot to offer when it comes to boating, from Lake Erie to other lakes scattered across the state.

While many Ohioans are planning to head into the water this Fourth of July weekend, the Ohio Department of Natural Resources is urging people to make safe decisions, especially when it comes to boating sober.

ODNR is taking part in a national, annual initiative called "Operation Dry Water" to educate boaters about the dangers of operating a boat under the influence. The goal is to reduce the number of alcohol and drug-related incidents as well as fatalies on the water, ODNR said. Operation Dry Water runs from July 4 to July 6 every year.

“Summer is here, and we want everyone to enjoy time on the water by keeping safety top of mind,” said Gov. Mike DeWine in a press release. “By boating sober this holiday and the entire summer season, we can make sure everyone is able to enjoy their experience on Ohio’s waterways.”

ODNR said boating under the influence (BUI) is the leading contributing factor in recreational boater deaths and injuries. In 2023, there were four boating accidents involving alcohol in the Buckeye State, according to ODNR. Of those accidents, one person died and two people were injured.

Across the nation in 2023, law enforcement officers removed 717 impaired operators from waterways during Operation Dry Water weekend.

“We're here to promote essential safety practices like wearing life jackets and taking boater education courses," said ODNR Director Mary Mertz in a press release. "ODNR is dedicated to ensuring every boater has a safe and fun time. Stay sober, stay alert, and enjoy your time on the water."

This Fourth of July and on any other day, ODNR is urging boaters to prioritize safety by choosing to boat sober, wear a life jacket and know Ohio's boating laws, which can be found here.

"The risk of serious injury is equal for both operators and passengers when alcohol is involved," ODNR wrote in a press release. "Additionally, alcohol consumption by passengers poses a danger regardless of the operator’s alcohol intake. Choose to boat sober this coming July 4 weekend to ensure everyone's safety on our waterways."
