CLEVELAND — The Cleveland Cavaliers are set to return to play Wednesday after having Sunday’s game postponed due to a COVID-19 outbreak within the team.

What You Need To Know

  • The Cleveland Cavs are set to resume action after having Sunday’s game postponed

  • The Cavs have eight players in health and safety protocol

  • Three out of five starters are among those in COVID-19 protocol

  • The Cavs are on a six-game winning streak and among the top teams in the Eastern Conference

Going into Wednesday’s game against the Celtics, the Cavs have eight players in COVID-19 protocol.

The Cavs’ COVID-19 outbreak started Dec. 16 when guard Issac Okoro was placed in COVID-19 protocol. In the days since, he has been joined by forwards Evan Mobley, Ed Davis, Jarrett Allen, Lamar Stevens, Dylan Windler and guards Denzel Valentine and RJ Nembhard.

To replenish the depleted roster, the Cavs signed Justin Anderson and Luke Kornet to 10-day contracts on Tuesday. The team then promoted Tre Scott from the team’s minor league affiliate Cleveland Charge, who was also signed to a 10-day contract.

Three of the eight players on COVID-19 protocol are regular starters for the Cavs. The outbreak leaves just guard Darius Garland and forward Lauri Markkanen as the remaining starters not in COVID-19 protocol.

The Celtics enter Wednesday’s game a bit shorthanded, too. As of Wednesday, seven players are in protocol, including starter Al Horford and key reserves Josh Richardson and Grant Williams.

The Cavs are riding a six-game winning streak and have compiled their best record, 19-12, since LeBron James left in 2018.
