FAIRFIELD, Ohio — The state of Ohio unveiled self-serve vehicle registration kiosks throughout the state on Wednesday, which is intended to save car owners time.

And soon, you might never have to visit an Ohio Bureau of Motor Vehicles location ever again, officials said.

The kiosks will allow owners to renew their registration for non-commercial vehicles. Officials say that renewing at the automated kiosks takes two minutes.

There are nine kiosk locations throughout Ohio, with state officials promising more. Four of the locations are at Meijer locations. The full list of locations is available on the Ohio BMV website.

“Many of these kiosks will provide individuals with self-service options around the clock and on demand,” BMV Registrar Charles Norman said. “The kiosks themselves are easy to use and very intuitive. Simply by scanning your driver’s license and answering a few easy questions, you can renew your vehicle registration, instatnalty print off your registration card and plate stickers within minutes.”

Norman said additional services could be offered by the kiosks in the future. 

How soon more locations will be added will depend on how popular the machines become.

“The more people use them, the more we’ll build them,” Ohio Lt. Gov. Jon Husted said. “Where there is a demand, we will supply that demand.”

Husted said the goal is to eventually make it possible for people to never go to the Bureau of Motor Vehicles ever again. 

“We’re taking every experience at the BMV that you can do remotely,” Husted said. 

While car owners have been able to renew their registrations online and through the mail for years, drivers have been required to enter the BMV once every four years for license renewals. Part of the process for license renewal includes a vision screening and updated photo of the driver.

Last week, the Ohio BMV announced that those who need a driver’s license or state ID reprinted can do so online. Husted said that the Ohio BMV reprints 500,000 licenses and state IDs per year.
