OHIO — New technology could reduce the number of people who need to make a stop at the Bureau of Motor Vehicles.
Lt. Gov. Jon Husted announced the roll-out of the license reprint option. The service allows motorists to go online and reprint their license if they've misplaced it.
Husted said it's part of InnovateOhio and their mission to use technology to better serve Ohioans. This update to the Bureau of Motor Vehicles website will serve thousands of Ohioans each year.
"This literally happens to people around about 500,000 replacements a year," said Husted. "That's 500,000 people that are going to have a much easier time navigating the system."
While the service is helpful, it's not available for everything. Renewals and license updates are not included.
"If you have to have changes to your driver's license, you know, you have a new address, you have a bunch of new things like that, you would have to come in," said Husted.
Though it doesn't work for every service yet, Husted said that is the long-term goal.
"It is my aspirational goal that you'll never have to into the BMV ever again," said Husted. "We're trying to continue to use technology to improve the way we service our customers. Hopefully, one day, eliminating the need for you to even have to go to the BVM."
Only one reprint is available between the initial issuance and renewal of an Ohio credential or between renewals of an Ohio credential. Husted said that's to keep Ohioans safe.
If another replacement is needed, it will need to be done at a BMV office.
The service may be accessed on the BMV website by selecting BMV online services, selecting DL/ID reprint and then loging in and beginning the process to reprint the ID, or by clicking here.
