CLEVELAND — Winter break is a time many kids may look forward to, but sometimes, they can get bored.

To keep kids busy, Cleveland Clinic Children's Pediatrician Dr. Gina Robinson offered tips on how to keep children entertained.

What You Need To Know

  • Cleveland Clinic Children's Pediatrician Dr. Gina Robinson said getting outside can help bring entertainment

  • However, indoor activities, such as baking, crafts and reading, are also good options

  • Robinson advised to limit screen time over the break

First things first: fresh air.

“Anytime you can, get outside and go for a walk,” said Robinson. “Scavenger hunts are fun, eye spy, just trying to see what you see around you in your neighborhood.”

For those in a colder climate, taking them snowboarding, skiing or sledding may also be an option to get some time outside, Robinson said. Other ideas are building a fort, making a snowman or slinging snowballs.

However, especially in Ohio, snow has been scarce so far this year. The state is home to a handful of ski resorts, including Brandywine and Boston Mills, as well as Snow Trails, which also offers snow tubing.

But let's say you've all spent enough time outside and want some indoor activities. Robinson said baking is an easy way for children to express creativity — plus, being the taste tester is half the fun.

Other ideas are making a holiday gift, reading a good book, pulling out a puzzle or playing a board game with the family, Robinson said. While video games and computers could help beat the boredom bug, Robinson advises to limit screen time.

“Take a break. Everything doesn’t have to be educational. We don’t want to spend the whole day looking at a screen, or the whole day playing video games either. So, trying to find the balance,” she said.

Robinson said a simple structure over the break can help make the return to school a bit easier for children.
