OHIO — The report cards are out and for some schools, they will need some extra support to meet Ohio's standards for academic achievement.

According to the data released from the Ohio Department of Education, there were more than 50 schools that failed to meet a minimum of three out of five stars. Three stars or more means a district met the state's standards. 

Ohio's report cards use a star system, rating schools one through five stars in the areas of performance, achievement, gap closing, graduation and early literacy. According to the rating system, schools who received a five star rating," Significantly exceeds state standards in academic achievement" while schools who scored a four exceeded the standards. Schools with a score of three stars met the state's standards.

There were seven school districts who rated one star for the 2022-2023 report card in the achievement category, including Dayton City District, Jefferson Township Local, Trotwood-Madison City, East Cleveland City School District, Lockland Local, Lorain City and Youngstown City.

Of the seven districts, three are located in Montgomery County, while the other four are located in Cuyahoga, Hamilton, Lorain and Mahoning.

In Montgomery County, Dayton City School District has 28 schools filled with more than 12,000 students. The district has a 84.9% attendance rate with a 70.8% four-year graduation rate. The school scored a 50.8 out of a maximum 108.8 when measuring achievement. 

At Jefferson Township Local, there are three schools with a total of 255. The attendance rate is 87.5% with a four-year graduation rate 73.7%. The district scored a 47.9 in achievement out of maximum 108.8. The final district in Montgomery County coming below the state standards is Trotwood-Madison City. 

Trotwood-Madison City has six schools within it with just over 2,500 students. The district has an attendance rate of 88.1% and a graduation rate of 83.5%, ranking slightly high the other Montgomery County districts. The district scored a 51.3 out of a maximum 108.8, having a higher score than the other two districts in achievement.

In Cuyahoga County, East Cleveland City School District has 1,398 students within six schools. The attendance rate is 84.2% and the district has a 84% four-year graduation rate. The district scored a 45.3 out of a maximum 108.8 for achievement. Lockland Local in Hamilton County has three schools with 456 students. The district has a 83.6% attendance rate with 64.4% four-year graduation rate. 

Youngstown City  has 4,658 students in a 14-school-district and has an attendance rate 83.9% attendance with an 84% four-year graduation rate.

The final school with a one star rating for the achievement component is Lorain City in Lorain County. The district scored a 53.3 out of a maximum 108.8 within its 16-schools. The district has 5,943 students with an 81.3% and a 76.8% four-year graduation rate.
