WAPAKONETA, Ohio – The state of Ohio has a lot of astronauts.
- 10-day festival to celebrate Armstrong's moon walk
- NASA TV will broadcast live from the Armstrong Museum
- Astronauts will be available for meet-and-greets
None more famous that Wapakoneta's Neil Armstrong. He was the first human to touch the moon on July 20, 1969.
Armstrong's legacy lives on through the generations of Americans who were inspired by his feat and his words, “That's one small step for man. One giant leap for mankind.”
A 50th anniversary celebration is planned through Wapakoneta and at the Armstrong Air and Space Museum from July 12 through the 21.
The Summer Moon Festival has typically been a weekend event each year, but this year has been expanded. A parade on Sunday will follow the exact route Armstrong traveled during his homecoming parade in 1969.
The parade starts at 4 p.m. but a new bronze statue of Armstrong will be unveiled at the museum at 11 a.m.
Other events include hot air balloons, rides, games, music, food, bed races, and more.
Several astronauts are scheduled to attend festivities at the museum on July 19 and 20. NASA TV is schedule to broadcast live on July 19.
The festival's main stage will feature 15 bands over four nights. A second stage will feature artists and entertainment.
Free shuttles will be provided to move people between parking areas, the fairgrounds, and the museum.
