WORCESTER, Mass. — Worcester Public Schools honored fallen Worcester Police Officer Enmanuel "Manny" Familia by naming their basketball court after him.

Familia died in June 2021 while trying to save a teenager drowning in a pond at Green Hill Park.

Family, friends and community members gathered for the special ceremony ahead of Doherty's first game of the year. Along with the naming of the court, the high school also retired Familia's number 11 jersey so no one can ever wear it again.

"Despite the devasting aftermath following Manny's true act of heroism, this community has ensured Officer Familia's legacy can be secured," Mayor Joseph Petty said. "Today, we come and honor the legacy of Officer Manny Familia. This event also serves as a reminder of how this community has come together time and time again."

Familia's brother Elvin spoke about what the honor meant to his family.

"And today, we come together to see his name being presented on this basketball floor of his high school for generations to come and admire," Familia said. "To me, this is the equivalent of a former Doherty player being inducted into the Basketball Hall of Fame. But better, way better, because Manny represents the good of this community and its people."

Familia's 16-year-old son Jovan also spoke on his father's legacy.

"Playing basketball was like an escape from my father," Jovan said. "It was his way to show off his talent and dedication to the sport, which later built his character to help those around him with his ability to connect and inspire others to want more for themselves. Although my father's death has held a negative impact on my life, it is an honor to say that my father's name was placed on the Doherty Memorial basketball court."
