GREAT BARRINGTON, Mass. - Firefighters in Great Barrington continued battling a large brush fire on Sunday, working on a smaller scale with a focus on monitoring the current situation.

The Massachusetts State Police Air Wing surveyed the area using infrared imaging to identify hot spots, and data showed there were various areas where fire was still smoldering. The Monterey Fire Tower was also staffed, with a strong focus on the fire area. Employees in the tower had not spotted any smoke as of Sunday afternoon.

“The wind today is expected to continue steadily throughout the day and we are anticipating that there will be flareups. This is not a cause for panic - this is expected,” the Great Barrington Fire Department posted to social media.

If there is any indication of danger to residential areas, firefighters will be ready to stage structural equipment and personnel to protect property.

The Department is emphasizing that everyone should stay clear of the area, particularly with the danger of falling trees near the mountain.

If you notice flames, you can report them by calling 413-528-0788 (Ext. 8).

In the event you feel there is immediate danger to a home or property or if you see fire outside of the known involved area, call 911.

Air quality will continue to be monitored, and if there is a deterioration in the air quality, the Department of Public Health will provide updated guidance.

During the week, the fire grew to cover roughly 1,200 acres. On Saturday, first responders shared that firebreaks - a man-made or natural gap in the forest intended to stop the growth of a fire - had been assembled around a perimeter to contain the fire. Officials said area imaging confirmed the fire had been confined to this area.
