SHREWSBURY, Mass. — If you've taken a drive down Route 9 recently, you may have seen this sign in Shrewsbury: "The Ground Round. Coming soon."
Halloween may have come and gone, but Shrewsbury couple Joe and Nachi Shea are bringing the brand back from the dead.
"So, 'The Ground Round' is a beloved brand," Joe said. "But specifically in Shrewsbury, there was a location that is even more beloved than the other ones as a whole. The community here in town always talks about it."
What You Need To Know
- Local couple Joe and Nachi Shea are opening "The Ground Round" in Shrewsbury.
- The franchise, founded in Massachusetts, closed its Shrewsbury location in 2004.
- The Shea's say they want to bring people back to their childhoods and provide a nostalgic place to hang out.
- They're hoping to open in January.
After nearly a decade of trying to become franchisees, the Sheas purchased the trademark after the brand's CEO announced they'd be winding down operations.
It's been 20 years since Shrewsbury's location closed. But the Sheas are hungry to return that feeling of nostalgia and togetherness.
"We always went there as a family," Joe said. "We went there with our sports teams after practice, after games. To celebrate a win or drown your sorrows with a loss. You know, being a little kid, the ice cream in the baseball caps always made you feel better."
"The hype online says it all, right?" Nachi said. "People are ready for this. I think they are really looking forward to taking a step back and to appreciate some of the things from their childhood and share that with the next generation."
Painters were working on the inside Thursday afternoon. On the outside, the iconic green and yellow paint can be seen on parts of the Grafton Street building, which used to house a Chinese restaurant.
"When you're inside, you really can't beat the charm of this building," said Joe. "There's really nothing like it in the area."
It's been a while since the Sheas have had skin in the restaurant game, with Nachi closing her last restaurant in 2011. But it hasn't changed their goals as they approach their launch.
"It's going to become an experience," Joe said. "It's not going to be just a place you go eat and leave. We really want to make it interactive and make it fun like it was in the old days."
