MILLBURY, Mass. - An investigation is underway following a deadly fire near the Blackstone River Bikeway near Route 146 in Millbury Saturday evening.

According to the Massachusetts Department of Fire Services, a state trooper responded to a small brush fire near the bike path at roughly 8:20 p.m. and found the victim in an encampment, where the fire is believed to have started.

The trooper then notified the Millbury Fire Department, which extinguished the fire.

The victim, an adult, was pronounced dead at the scene, and the cause and manner of death will be determined by the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner, along with identifying the deceased individual.

The incident is being investigated by Millbury Fire and Police, as well as Massachusetts State Police assigned to the offices of the State Fire Marshal and Worcester County District Attorney’s Office.

At the time of the fire, Massachusetts was under a Red Flag warning, meaning that any outdoor fire could spread quickly and become difficult to put out. The Red Flag warning remained in place on Sunday.
