WORCESTER, Mass. - Hundreds of people gathered outside Mercadante Funeral Home & Chapel on Saturday for the funeral of Enrique Delgado-Garcia, the Massachusetts State Police recruit who died after a boxing training exercise.

Friends who spoke after the remembrance said they’ll miss Delgado-Garcia’s smile and genuine care for others, while his cousin, Obed Canario-Garcia, said he’s still feeling distraught and in disbelief over the tragedy.

“I have a lot of questions that need to be answered, but they’re not going to be answered today,” Canario-Garcia said.

Delgado-Garcia was sworn in as a state trooper shortly before he passed away, and earlier this week, attorney David Meier was selected to lead an independent investigation into his death.

“This is probably one of the worst things that could ever possibly happen to an individual that was just trying to make a difference and change the stigma of the police,” Canario-Garcia said. “Hopefully things will get resolved, and until then, all we can do is grieve and get over the emotions that are taking place at the moment.”

An honor guard delivered an American flag to his family, and the funeral also included a flyover from the State Police Air Wing.

The Worcester County District Attorney's office recused itself from the investigation because Delgado-Garcia had worked in the office.

“There’s no way this office could handle this,” DA Joseph Early said last week. “Everyone loved Enrique.”

Meier is the former chief of homicide in the Suffolk County DA's office.

Massachusetts Attorney General Andrea Campbell said his experience will ensure independence and integrity in the matter.
