"Rodents in general have a lot of diseases so people really need to be careful if they see a rodent," said Health Director Paulina Matusik. "If they see an animal. It's also rabi season, so just being educated and aware of the potential and harmful effects."
Health Director Paulina Matusik said rodents have been an issue in the town for years.
Some residents said they've noticed an increase in rodents around the area of the Ludlow Mills which is under construction.
"I've heard about it," said Belchertown Resident Stephen Czupryna. "Matter of fact we have a friend that lives down by the apartments where the rats are."
Other residents have raised concerns in areas like East Street as well.
"It's not good," Czupryna said. "They claim diseases and stuff. I don't know. I would think they would. I wouldn't want them in my neighborhood just for that reason."
The town said residents can reduce the spread by keeping their lawns mowed as well as sealing up their trash and keeping food contained.
"Covering their trash cans, not feeding the birds, not leaving water out," Matusik said. "So you want to take away all of those factors to not let rats or any stray animals into your yard."
The health department said anyone who notices rodents in their area should contact the town for support.
