WORCESTER, Mass. - People looking to do their banking in Worcester, will soon have another option. UniBank has announced plans to open a new full-service branch across from Polar Park.

The bank recently signed a lease for the space at One Green Island Boulevard and plans to provide services in what they call a fast-growing neighborhood, which is currently without a retail bank.

The branch will be inside the Revington, an apartment building in the Canal District.

“We wanted to be part of the greater revitalization because we believe that institutions, when done well, mean something and helped transform a community” said CEO Michael Welch. “So when there was talk about the Pawtucket Red Sox coming up to town, we stepped right in and jumped in to become one of the first of the founding 21 partners to bring the now Worcester Red Sox to town. And then when there was talk about building in the area, we made a financial commitment through loans to help build the Revington, which is behind me. And now this is just a natural extension to open a full-service branch right here.”

Welch said construction of the new branch will start in the coming weeks and is expected to open this fall.

This branch brings them to 15 branches, mostly in Central Massachusetts and with some in the MetroWest.

He said UniBank is the largest financial institution headquartered in Central Massachusetts.
