UXBRIDGE, Mass. — Uxbridge voters will decide on funding for the school district at a special town meeting next week.
Currently, there is no budget in place for the next school year. The teacher’s union is urging residents to adopt the budget.
Two-thirds of voters attending the meeting will need to pass the more than $27 million budget proposed by the school committee and superintendent.
When the school budget failed to pass in May, the district had to send layoff notices to every educator. So as of now, none of them will have a job.
Union president Brian Carter said it's critical people get out and vote.
"Uxbridge has to provide a school system for their students,” Carter said. “We want to make sure that they have the best possible education. We work tirelessly in the district to make sure that we are providing them with the best education possible that Uxbridge will fund. Currently, Uxbridge is not funding anybody its education as of July 1, and that needs to be in place."
The $27.59 million proposal moving forward Tuesday is lower than the one voted in May and will include cuts to staff and student services.
The town meeting is set for 7 p.m. on Tuesday.
