UXBRIDGE, Mass. - Voters in Uxbridge have decided not to approve Uxbridge Public Schools’ fiscal year 2025 budget, and the district’s superintendent claims they weren’t given the proper facts before casting their ballots.

Michael Baldassarre said residents took the vote after receiving incorrect information of the consequences, believing the school district would still be funded on a month-to-month basis. The Massachusetts Department of Elementary and Secondary Education has since clarified no money will be directed toward the school district as a result of this vote beginning July 1.

For non-regional school districts like Uxbridge, there is no 1/12 automatic budget mechanism, despite what voters were reportedly told at the May 14 town meeting. This information has also been confirmed by the district’s legal counsel.

Baldassarre plans to share this information in greater detail with the Uxbridge School Committee during their regularly scheduled meeting on Monday, May 20 and discuss the best path forward. The committee will then report back to the community with proposed next steps.

Baldassarre said he will continue to work with the Department of Elementary and Secondary Education for further clarification, and receive written guidance to help address the situation as soon as possible.
