BRIMFIELD, Mass. - Cue the circus music because the Brimfield Antique Flea Market is in town through Sunday this week.

What You Need To Know

  • The Brimfield Flea Market, America's oldest antique show, is running through Sunday this week
  • New York resident Roy Aletti has been coming to the market for over 35 years as a vendor, and still attends the circus on a yearly basis
  • Aletti auditioned to be a clown in the 1970s while collecting antiques related to cartoons and the circus

"Every year, I never miss the circus," Brimfield Flea Market vendor Roy Aletti said. "Matter of fact, I still go. Once a year, every year."

New York resident Roy Aletti said he's been coming to America's oldest antique show for over 35 years, sharing a love of performance art's he's had since he was a child.

"I've got a passion for the circus because I auditioned for clown college in 1976," he said.  "I got narrowed down to 10, but of the 10 they only took two, so I didn't get picked for clown college but my passion for the circus went on."

Aletti said he also has a passion for antique collecting.

"I like anything fun, music, cartoons, comedians, anything that'll put a smile on your face," he said. "Matter of fact, most people, when they walk by, they do smile when they come by my booth. They may not buy something but they smile anyway. We give them a smile."

Aletti also has one item that may bring back some familiar sounds.

"That was a 1926 Wurlitzer band organ," he said. "Some people call it a merry-go-round but it's a carousel organ. When you were a kid and you rode a carousel, one of those machines would be playing."

Aletti said the circus is one of the earliest forms of entertainment in the country, and he gets joy from seeing people experience its history.

"Oh I love it," he said.  "I live to see people see it for the first time, who are not familiar with it and introducing them to a new collective, a new passion, joining a new club."
