SHREWSBURY, Mass. – Advocates are calling on Saint John's High School to address claims of sexual assault alleged to have happened in the 1960s.
Spectrum News 1 spoke with attorney Mitchell Garabedian and he said no legal action has been taken yet, but advocate Robert Hoatson said if they have to, they will.
Hoatson is a sexual assault survivor and former priest who founded the nonprofit Road to Recovery, a charity that assists victims of sexual abuse and their families. Hoatson says three brothers who attended Saint John’s in the 1960s are alleging they were sexually abused by a former lay teacher at the school.
The brothers allege Richard Doyle, a former teacher at Saint John’s who died in 1976, sexually abused them as students multiple times. The brothers say they’ve dealt with significant trauma in the years since. Hoatson was by himself outside of Worcester City Hall, holding signs reading "Xavierian brothers: stop ignoring abuse victims."
"I came to city hall because the people of Worcester and the Diocese of Worcester, the Catholic Diocese of Worcester, should be informed about what's happening at Saint John's High School," Hoatson said. "And I'm hoping that some of the ladies and gentlemen who are occupying these very fancy office buildings, who are graduates of Saint John's High School, will notice this and put pressure on the Xaverian brothers to do the right thing."
Spectrum News 1 reached out to Saint John's Tuesday. Headmaster Alex Zequiera said the school had no further comment.
Hoatson says he plans on holding signs outside of the school and throughout the area as long as he feels it is necessary.
