CHICOPEE, Mass. - Massachusetts State Police say 3-year-old Liam David Pagan is safe after he was allegedly kidnapped while inside the back of a sedan in Chicopee earlier Friday morning.
The incident set off an Amber Alert.
Police say at 8:51 this morning they received a 911 call from a woman saying her red Toyota Camry had just been stolen with her 3-year-old son by himself in the back seat in the area of 136 Exchange Street.
Vadim Vorobyov, 52, of Springfield has been identified as a suspect in connection with the child abduction.
Massachusetts State Police along with Connecticut State Police worked together to find Vorobyov at Anytime Fitness in Windsor, Connecticut while Pagan was found at a hotel in Windsor.
Vorobyov will be charged with kidnapping, child endangerment and fugitive from justice in Connecticut and is also expected to be charged with kidnapping, child endangerment, and motor vehicle larceny in Massachusetts.
"I think you could probably hear a huge sigh of relief through everybody on scene in the department," said Chicopee Police Public Information Officer Travis Ordiorne. "All the radios were on and everybody was listening to it. WESTCOMM was monitoring it and so when that call came out that he was located. We could slow things down to do the investigation and finalize this."
Chicopee Police say Pagan was transported to a local hospital to be evaluated but it does not appear he was harmed. Police said Friday afternoon Vorobyov is being booked at Connecticut State Police and will be extradited to Massachusetts at a later date.
