WORCESTER, Mass. - Playing in a championship game on St. Patrick's Day, Holy Cross' Bronagh Power-Cassidy wasn't to be denied. The native of Dublin, Ireland led the Crusaders offensively and played strong on the defensive end in Sunday's 61-55 win over Boston University in the Patriot League Tournament Championship game.
Holy Cross, the Patriot League's regular-season champion, never trailed in a wire-to-wire win the third-seeded Terriers. The game was also a rematch of last season's tournament final which the Crusaders won. The Crusaders (20-12) are the first team to win back-to-back Patriot League Championships, since Navy won it three years in a row (2011, 2012, 2013).
The Crusaders learned Sunday night they will be a 16-seed in the NCAA Tournament and will play UT Martin in a First Four game. A win would earn them a meeting with the region's top seed, the Iowa Hawkeyes and their superstar, Caitlin Clark.
Power-Cassidy was named Patriot League Championship MVP for the second consecutive season. She had eight rebounds, three steals and two assists to go with her game-high 21 points. Fellow seniors Cara McCormack and Janelle Allen joined her on the All-Tournament Team. McCormack scored 13 of her 15 points in the second half, which included a key three-pointer at the end of the third quarter. The Crusaders also held BU's Caitlin Weimar, the Patriot League Player of the Year, to just seven points.
