STURBRIDGE, Mass. -  A group of Sturbridge first responders were honored Wednesday by Worcester County District Attorney Joseph D. Early Jr. for reviving one of their fellow officers after a heart attack last year.

The Sturbridge Emergency Communications Unit said they received a call on the evening of Dec. 17 from Officer Jefferey Lavallee's wife saying she had found her husband unconscious and not breathing shortly after he had said he was going to lie down to rest.

The District Attorney's office says Lavallee's recovery is nothing short of a miracle, with medical personnel at Harrington Memorial Hospital having to put Lavallee in a medically-induced coma for part of his recovery.

Lavallee was in attendance during the ceremony and said he's extremely grateful to his community for saving his life.

"Matt Schlegel and the other officers who assisted with CPR, the medical staff and personnel who responded with advanced health care, and then the efforts, the health care of the hospital and the ICU," Lavallee said. "So it's just amazing. Everybody coming together for me, and I'm here now because of it."

Lavalee said he is unsure when he will return to work, but said he is doing well in his recovery.
